Spent the early morning harvesting a few CSA shares for a Monday drop-off. This is the first week of shares, and they’re still small, mainly greens… There are many tiny farming routines, things you’d probably never do in a bigger operation, that I find extremely relaxing and fun: the final rinsing and putting together of a handful of shares is one of them (it’s not really economical to separately harvest and drop off less than 10 shares or so, this is an…exception). There’s something deeply satisfying about this final post-harvest step, with the veggies together at their finest, the memory of the different quick individual harvests—picking, cutting, pulling—still fresh, that’s…cool! The spinach (above) was quickly dunked in cold well water to rinse off dirt splashed up from recent rain, then allowed to drip dry for a bit on the screen table.

Four months ago I purchased a Morphy Richards kettle from the Co-op in Wigston. Last weekend it decided to stop working. I did all the usual things like check the plug, wiring etc which were all fine. I came to the conclusion that its time was up and had died.

Today, the pumpkins came in, wrested from a jungle of pigweed gone wild. Every year, a few of the 40 50′x50′ sections that make up the 2.5 acre garden get a little overrun with one weed or another (usually, pigweed). This year’s pumpkin patch was a good example, with pigweed growing unchecked for a good six weeks—no time made to weed, not IMPORTANT enough a crop—until today, when Raechelle used the belly-mounted 52″ mower deck on the Kubota compact tractor to mow it down!

After this release Persson would form the holy Trad, Gras och Stenar and melt faces all over the world. In fact, I was lucky enough to see them play Chicago a few years back and these geriatrics slayed all the weird beard fake hippies in the room. Though they might look like grandpas they continue to rule. Good for them. That aside, this is probably the most folky of Persson work. Really enchanting sounds that have a certain earthy appeal, but don't worry, there's still plenty of brain fried heaviness.

I've done standard 2X, ply strips, and metal. The last two are my favorites. In the old days (the 70s), mid-grade remodels in old houses often went like this: 1) Set the bases. 2) Set the counters, complete with full 18" backsplash, covering up all old plaster, elec. runs, etc. 3) Set the uppers, using the full backsplash as a ledger. 4) Climb up onto your bench with a pair of snips and a drill, and frame a metal soffit up from the top of the cabinets. If you had a helper, there was no need to climb down until the first coat of mud was on. Very efficient.

Imke Hoehler, an industrial design student at Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Germany, conceived of a beautiful design solution to an ugly problem: every year over 2.5 million people die because of lack of access to clean water. Hoehler’s thesis project, the DropNet fog collector, is a device that literally harvests drinking water from the air, collecting water vapor from the air and condensing it into drinkable water for all. Each DropNet would have the capacity to harvest 10-20 liters of water per day, and an array of the pods could provide enough water for a small village. The construction of the DropNets has yet to be resolved though Hoehler imagines they can be easily made from local resources by non-skilled workers anywhere.
